World Childless Week 11 – 17 September

Today, September 11th 2017, marks the first day of the first World Childless Week which continues until Sunday 17th September.

The campaign, set up by Stephanie Phillips, has been created to banish the stigma of being unable to have children. This might be due to fertility problems, infertility as well as other issues.

There are a number of different infertility weeks already but most are focused on how to improve fertility rather than deal with the long-term mental effects of being infertile and childless.

Research suggests those who suffer infertility problems feel ashamed, guilty, have self-confidence issues, mental health problems and it can wreak havoc on other elements in their lives. It can also make them feel like the world is a hostile place where nobody else can understand what they are going through.

World Childless Week is about giving a voice to those who might feel marginalised or isolated because they are unable to have children and giving them as much support as possible.

It is also about connecting people who might be going through similar issues in what the campaign founders call ‘a child-centric world’ and helping those who do not have fertility problems to gain a better understanding.
